Frequently Asked Questions about CoVulc Functionalized Rubber Powder (FMRP)
What is CoVulc functionalized micronized rubber powder (FMRP)? CoVulc is a functionalized micronized rubber powder developed by Sustainable Rubber Solutions. Unlike conventional micronized rubber powder, CoVulc is engineered to actively participate in the rubber matrix during vulcanization. It is not a filler, but a compound extender that contributes to mechanical performance such as tensile strength, modulus, tear strength and abrasion resistance.
Is CoVulc a filler or a compound extender? CoVulc is not a filler. It is a compound extender that integrates into the rubber network and replaces all components in the rubber compound formulation like the polymer and carbon black while maintaining performance.
How does CoVulc FMRP reduce dependence on virgin rubber? CoVulc acts as a compound extender and replaces part of the polymer in rubber formulations, reducing the need for virgin natural and synthetic rubber.
Can CoVulc be used in tyre and industrial rubber applications? Yes. CoVulc is suitable for tyre compounds, industrial rubber goods such as seals, hoses and belts, as well as automotive and molded rubber applications.
Can recycled rubber maintain mechanical performance? With conventional recycled rubber, performance is often reduced. CoVulc is specifically designed to maintain mechanical properties such as tensile strength, modulus, tear resistance and abrasion resistance, enabling high-performance circular compounds.
How does CoVulc affect tensile strength, tear strength and abrasion resistance? CoVulc maintains strong mechanical properties compared to untreated recycled rubber powders. Tensile strength and modulus are well preserved, also tear strength and abrasion resistance remain suitable for demanding applications such as tyres and industrial rubber goods.
Can CoVulc FMRP be combined with recovered carbon black (rCB)? Yes. CoVulc can be combined with recovered carbon black (rCB) to create highly circular rubber compounds with balanced mechanical performance.
Is CoVulc more expensive than untreated micronized rubber powder? CoVulc is designed to be cost-competitive or more economical on a system cost basis, as it replaces multiple ingredients in a compound while maintaining performance.
Which applications benefit most from functionalized rubber powder? Applications that require a balance between cost, sustainability and performance benefit most, including tyres, industrial rubber goods and automotive components.
Is CoVulc available for sampling and testing? Yes. CoVulc is available for sampling and validation testing. Sustainable Rubber Solutions supports customers with formulation development and testing and offers performance evaluation in customer compounds in their rubber testing laboratory.
